Bethel Mar Thoma Church is the second of the three Mar Thoma Parishes in Chicago land. It was formed in 1991 as a chapel of the Chicago Mar Thoma Church. The present Mar Thoma Valiya Metropolitan, Philipose Mar Chrysostom, the then Diocesan bishop recognizing the dire need and the long cherished dream of many families living in the far South suburbs of Chicago granted permission for starting a Sunday school and a chapel. The facilities of the Nazarene church of Tinley park was rented for the purpose. The chapel grew with a vibrant Sunday school, Youth group, and Sevika Sanghom under the able leadership of Rev. Renji Varughese and Rev. George Mathew, vicars of Chicago Mar Thoma Church, the mother parish.

By the Lord’s grace on September 1, 1994 the congregation was able to purchase the Apostolic Church building in Frankfort, IL. Thereafter the services were held at the new building. The Diocesan bishop Rev. Dr. Zacharias Mar Theophilus dedicated the building on November 13, 1994. Under Thirumeni’s recommendation, the Synod upgraded the chapel to a full-fledged parish, named Bethel Mar Thoma Church, Frankfort, IL, with effect from January 1, 1995. Rev. Jaims Thomas served as the first vicar of the church, followed by Rev. P.P. Thomas, Rev. Dr. G. Samuel, Rev. V.T. John, Rev. Philip Varghese and Rev. Varghese Mathew, who is the present vicar.

The formation of the parish has been a great blessing for the Marthomites residing in the far South suburbs of Chicago. It has played an immense role in the spiritual growth of all the members, especially our children and youth. The fact that our Sunday school students are placed at the very top in the Diocesan Examinations, every year is a matter of great joy and pride for the parish. For the Navathy project, celebrating the ninetieth birthday of Rt. Rev. Dr. Philipose Mar Chrysostom Valiya Metropolitan, 90% of our families sponsored one house each, which served as an example and motivation for other parishes. Though very small in size, the parish is enthuse astically involved in the various activities of the parent church at the diocesan, regional and local levels. Also, since the time of its formation, the parish has been an active member of the Ecumenical Council of Kerala Churches in Chicago. The parish is also involved in the local community in diverse ways. As a parish we look forward to serving the Lord faithfully in the coming years.
